There are various factors that dictate the lifetime of orthotics. The material from which the equipment is made from is one of the main factors. At The Foot Institute, orthotics are made from firm plastic material to last for a longer period and allow them to be replaced less often.
Lifespan
On average, our hard plastic orthotics last for four to five years. Softer materials such as leather, cork and foams deform with time and enjoy a lifespan of about three years depending on the design.
The level of activity per day is the other major factor. As expected, a marathon runner is much harder on their feet than a “weekend warrior”.
Medical Changes
An active foot is very dynamic and forces movement with every step to effectively manage forces. As time go, the foot is bound to change, and more active people will notice a dramatic and quicker change. When this happens, it is time to replace your orthotics.
Other issues such as a major joint replacement and natural growth may warrant for an orthotics replacement. A hip or knee replacement will alter the entire mechanism of the lower extremity enough to demand a new orthotic.
Some women experience changes in their feet during and after first pregnancy. Such cases are not to be ignored and they warrant a reevaluation for new orthotics
Finally
If you accidentally damage your orthotic or your household pet chews it up well, you need to replace your orthotics.
